Sanctuary in Stare Skoszewy, Catholic pilgrimage church in Stare Skoszewy, Poland
The Sanctuary in Stare Skoszewy is a brick Catholic pilgrimage church in the village of Stare Skoszewy, Poland, built in the baroque revival style. Its red brick walls are decorated with curved lines and ornamental details around the windows and roofline, and a tower rises above the surrounding trees and fields.
Two fires destroyed earlier wooden churches on the same site before the present brick structure was completed in 1936. The decision to rebuild in brick and in the baroque revival style reflected the community's wish for a more lasting place of worship.
Inside the church, visitors can see an icon known as Our Lady of Skoszewy, depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. Once a year, a large celebration is held in her honor, drawing pilgrims from the surrounding area for prayers and processions.
The church sits near the center of Stare Skoszewy village and can be reached by car or bus from the direction of Łódź along local roads. Visiting outside major feast days allows for a quieter experience inside the building.
The church is dedicated to both Saint Barbara and the Virgin Mary, a relatively rare double dedication for a rural sanctuary. On the feast days of both figures, the building becomes the center of special services and gatherings that bring together people from several surrounding villages.
