Old Town in Piotrkow Trybunalski, Medieval old town in Piotrków Trybunalski, Poland.
The Old Town of Piotrków Trybunalski is a medieval town center in central Poland, built around a rectangular market square from which a regular grid of streets extends outward. Around the square stand townhouses, churches and a castle dating from different centuries, all within easy walking distance of one another.
The town grew in the 14th century and in 1493 hosted the first sitting of Poland's parliament, which gave it a long period of political weight. That central role drew investment and construction that helped shape the built fabric still visible today.
The streets around the market square still serve as a gathering point for local residents, not just a place for visitors. The presence of Catholic, Orthodox and former Jewish buildings side by side tells the story of a town where several communities once shared the same space.
The area is compact and easy to cover on foot, with all the main buildings grouped around the central square. A full walk through the different streets and courtyards takes at least a couple of hours if done without rushing.
The street layout was deliberately designed as a model for other Polish towns, which is why it reads as unusually regular compared to most old town centers. Walking through it, the geometry of the grid is still easy to notice even without a map.
