Szklary Tunnel, Railway tunnel in Szklary, Poland.
Szklary Tunnel is a narrow-gauge railway tunnel located in the village of Szklary, Rzeszów County, in southeastern Poland. At 602 meters long, it is the longest narrow-gauge railway tunnel on the European continent.
The tunnel opened in September 1904, built to carry sugar beets and timber through the region as part of the industrial development of the then Austrian-ruled province of Galicia. It supported the growth of trade and agriculture across what is now the Podkarpacie area.
The tunnel is part of the Pogorzanin narrow-gauge railway, which runs through the Mleczka River valley between Przeworsk and Dynów. The line is recognized as a landmark along this historic rail corridor in the Podkarpacie region.
The tunnel is currently closed to train traffic due to flood and landslide damage, and access to the site may be restricted. Anyone planning a visit should check the current conditions in advance before making the trip.
In winter, ice formations build up inside the tunnel, creating natural sculptures made of frozen water. This seasonal display draws photographers from across Europe who come to document the structures.
