Lima River, River system in Viana do Castelo, Portugal and A Limia, Spain
The Lima River flows for roughly 108 kilometers starting from Talariño Mountain in Spain and traveling through northern Portugal until it meets the Atlantic Ocean near Viana do Castelo. Along its course, it passes through valleys and small towns before reaching the sea.
Roman soldiers believed this river was the mythological River Lethe, which would erase their memories, and refused to cross it initially. The construction of Alto Lindoso Dam in the 20th century transformed the landscape and created a large reservoir.
Communities living beside this river have shaped their food and daily routines through generations of fishing. Today, these traditions remain visible in local kitchens and in how people spend their time near the water.
The Alto Lindoso Dam generates electricity for Spanish and Portuguese communities while maintaining a large reservoir. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for visiting, with moderate temperatures and green landscapes.
The submerged village of Aceredo appears during extreme droughts, revealing stone buildings and structures from before the dam was built. These rare moments offer glimpses into a lost piece of the region's past.
