Third Tagus Crossing, Cable-stayed bridge project in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Third Tagus Crossing is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the Tagus River, connecting Lisbon on the north bank with Barreiro to the south. The structure carries three traffic lanes and two railway tracks in each direction, handling both cars and trains simultaneously.
The project emerged from a strategic plan to improve high-speed rail connections between Lisbon and Madrid, and Lisbon and Seville through the RAVE initiative. This link was important for modernizing rail transport between Portugal and Spain.
The design by Lavigne & Cheron architecture firm incorporates engineering elements that reflect Portuguese infrastructure advancement in the 21st century.
The bridge links two important regions and is part of a larger transport system combining car and train traffic. Visitors should note that it is active traffic infrastructure best experienced while traveling across it.
The bridge design features towers reaching 198 meters in height, with foundations extending 70 meters deep through piles measuring 2.5 meters in diameter.
