Fountain of the Virtues

The granite fountain features a central high backrest with two pilasters, supporting a cornice adorned with a royal coat of arms and Renaissance faces.

In 1619, Porto's municipal council initiated the construction of this water source, initially named Fonte do Rio Frio due to its proximity to the river.

Local residents attributed medicinal properties to the fountain's waters, connecting them to the Virgin Mary and leading to its current name, Fountain of the Virtues.

The fountain collected water from multiple unused mines in the area, providing essential public access to drinking water for the community of Porto.

Stone benches originally flanked the fountain's tank and pathway, creating a 17th-century social gathering space for pedestrians near a former Jewish cemetery.
