Virtudes garden

Virtudes garden is a public park in Miragaia that rises across multiple steep terraces, creating distinct viewing platforms overlooking the Douro River, the Alfândega building, and Vila Nova de Gaia's waterfront. The layered design follows the natural slope of the hillside, with paths and spaces at each level offering different perspectives of the surrounding landscape.

The garden was designed by José Marques Loureiro in the 19th century on the former grounds of Porto Gardens Company. Its original layout continues to shape how visitors move through and experience the space.

Local residents gather in this green space to socialize, play music, and participate in community activities throughout the seasons.

The steep terraces require some physical effort to navigate, particularly when wet, so sturdy shoes are recommended for safety. Plan enough time to move at a comfortable pace as you explore the different levels without rushing.

Within the garden stands a ginkgo biloba tree over 200 years old, serving as a silent witness to generations of Porto's history. Few visitors notice this ancient specimen, yet it remains one of the garden's most distinctive botanical features.
