Santa Justa Lift, Art Nouveau elevator in Baixa, Portugal.
The Santa Justa Lift rises 45 meters high with an iron tower structure, containing two wooden cabins that transport people between Baixa and Chiado districts.
Engineer Raul Mesnier constructed this transportation system in 1901, initially operating on steam power before converting to electricity in 1907.
The elevator represents a fusion of transportation and architecture, with decorated iron lattices and double-beamed structure reflecting early 20th century Portuguese engineering.
The lift operates daily from 7:00 to 22:45, carrying 29 passengers per cabin, with access included in the Lisboa Card transportation pass.
Two spiral staircases lead to an observation platform offering views of Lisbon's Castle of São Jorge, Rossio Square, and the Tagus River.

Gustave Eiffel and his firm designed and constructed metal bridges across several continents between the 1860s and early 1900s. These structures enabled railway and road connections over rivers, gorges, and valleys. The bridges used wrought iron and later steel, with truss and arch designs that represented advanced engineering methods for their time. Examples of this work are found in Portugal, where the Maria Pia Bridge crosses the Douro River, and in France, including the Garabit Viaduct over the Truyère. In Vietnam, the Long Bien Bridge connects Hanoi across the Red River. Additional structures stand in Peru, Bolivia, and other South American countries. Many of these bridges remain operational or accessible as preserved engineering monuments.
Discover Lisbon's monuments, historical buildings and museums designed for children. The itinerary includes castles, interactive exhibitions and architectural landmarks. Children can explore marine life at the oceanarium, learn about navigation history, ride historic trams, and enjoy large parks with playgrounds. The route combines educational visits to science museums with recreational stops at the zoo and gardens.
