Church of Santa Maria do Olival
Church of Santa Maria do Olival, Gothic church from 12th century in Tomar, Portugal.
The Church of Santa Maria do Olival is a Gothic building with three naves marked by pointed arches and columns that rise directly from the ground without decorative capitals. The space is covered by wooden roofing that shapes the interior light and atmosphere.
Founded in the late 12th century by Templar Master Gualdim Pais, this church initially served as the main burial ground for the Templars. It later remained an important burial site when the Order of Christ took over the region.
The rose window on the eastern wall shows detailed medieval Portuguese design, with its pentagram shape reflecting religious symbolism of the period. Walking through the church, you notice how this window was central to the building's spiritual purpose.
You can visit the church during the day, but should remain quiet and avoid photography if religious services are taking place. Respecting ongoing worship helps you experience the space as it is meant to be used.
The tomb slab of Gualdim Pais from 1195 remains inside the church, bearing one of Portugal's oldest Gothic inscriptions. This carved stone tells much about early Gothic writing styles in the country.
