Jardim Botânico Tropical, Botanical garden in Belém district, Portugal.
Jardim Botânico Tropical is a botanical garden located between Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Palace, featuring over 500 species from tropical and subtropical regions. The grounds span about 7 hectares and include various landscaped areas showcasing plant collections from different climate zones.
The garden was established in 1906 through a royal decree by King Carlos and initially served to support agricultural services and training for Portuguese colonial territories. Its development was closely linked to Portugal's colonial interests across overseas regions.
The garden displays Oriental design elements that trace back to a 1940 exhibition where a colonial-themed section was presented. Visitors can still see these influences today in the landscaped areas.
The garden is accessible from April through September and from October through March, with opening hours varying by season. Visitors should note that the grounds are closed on certain public holidays.
The garden houses rare plant species that no longer exist in their natural habitats, such as ancient specimens of the Ginkgo tree. These special collections make it an important place for preserving plant diversity.
