Rock of the Three Kingdoms, Rock formation at Moimenta e Montouto, Portugal

Penedo de los Tres Reinos is a rock formation in the Serra de Marabon mountain range near the Portuguese-Spanish border at around 1,025 meters elevation. The formation consists of large stone masses set in a rugged landscape that offers wide views across the border region.

The rock received its official significance in 1864 when a boundary commission designated it as the border marker between Portugal and Spain. It confirmed divisions that had existed between medieval kingdoms in the Alto Tras-os-Montes region for centuries.

The rock served as a meeting point where three medieval kingdoms converged, making it a significant reference for people living in the border area. Visitors today can sense how this location marked cultural and territorial divisions that shaped the region.

The formation is accessible via a marked trail that starts from Moimenta village, providing direct access to the rock. Good hiking boots are recommended since the terrain is rough and the elevation requires some physical effort.

This spot is one of only four triple border points between Portuguese and Spanish territories across the Iberian Peninsula. This rare geographical situation makes it a special example of how European borders meet in the landscape.
