Castle of Óbidos

Castle of Óbidos is a fortress with thick stone walls surrounding the settlement, built and reinforced over different periods and reaching heights of over 13 meters (43 feet) in places. Multiple towers are integrated into the defensive structure, creating a complex medieval layout.

King Afonso I of Portugal captured this fortress from Moorish forces in 1148 during the Christian Reconquista campaign. The structure was later reinforced and modified multiple times to meet changing defensive needs across the centuries.

The castle keeps its medieval character through preserved architectural features like 16th-century windows and royal Portuguese emblems visible on the walls. These elements connect visitors directly to the rulers who once occupied this fortress.

You can walk along the castle walls, which reach 13 meters (43 feet) high in places but have no protective railings, so careful footing is important. The elevated position offers views across the surrounding countryside and the settlement below.

The former royal palace inside the fortress now operates as a hotel, letting guests sleep in rooms where Portuguese kings and queens once lived. This unusual approach blends history with modern hospitality in a surprising way.
