Castelo de Veiros

Castelo de Veiros is a medieval fortress built with stone walls arranged in a trapezoidal shape, using slate, granite, and marble in its construction. The structure shows the typical design of a border fortification with multiple entrances and substantial defensive walls.

The keep was built in 1308 during King Dinis I's reign as part of a strategic border defense plan managed by the Order of Avis. This fortification was one of several key positions that controlled the region during medieval times.

The São Salvador Church built inside the castle grounds shows how this place served both spiritual and defensive purposes for local people. Visitors can see how religious life was integrated into the fortress itself, making it more than just a military structure.

The site is maintained by the municipality of Estremoz and is accessible for visitors who want to explore the structure. Some areas may have access restrictions, so it is helpful to check local conditions before arriving.

Three of the original four gates remain standing and give access to different sections of the fortification. These entrances show how visitors can move through multiple defensive layers and understand the layout of the original structure.
