Castle of Amieira do Tejo

Castle of Amieira do Tejo, Medieval castle in Arez e Amieira do Tejo, Portugal.

Castelo de Amieira is a rectangular fortress with Gothic architecture in the Amieira do Tejo region. Four corner towers and thick stone walls define the structure as it rises above the surrounding Alentejo landscape.

The Knights Hospitaler received permission from King Sancho II in 1256 to build this fortress and expand their military presence in southern Portugal. The 16th century brought additional construction and changes to the complex.

The castle served as a religious center for the military order that built it, and local people gathered here during times of conflict for protection and community events.

The castle is accessible by way of the EN 359 road or through connections from the A6 highway to the IP6 and EN 118 routes. Being located in rural countryside, having your own transport makes visiting more convenient.

The Chapel of São João Baptista was added in 1556 and features a vaulted ceiling with a Renaissance altar hidden within the fortress walls. Visitors often miss this ornately decorated space since it blends quietly into the complex.
