Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum, Art Nouveau museum in Avenidas Novas, Lisbon, Portugal

The Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House is an Art Nouveau residence converted into a museum displaying a private collection of paintings, Chinese porcelain, and European furnishings. The building features the characteristic style of that era with ornate decorative elements and carefully crafted details throughout its interior spaces.

The building was designed by architect Manuel Joaquim Norte Júnior in 1904 as a private residence and won an architecture award the following year for its outstanding design. It was later converted to a museum to preserve the owner's art collection and make it accessible to the public.

The residence reflects how wealthy Lisbon families at the turn of the 20th century collected art from Europe and Asia and displayed it in their homes. Walking through the rooms, you see how they arranged paintings and porcelain as part of their daily surroundings.

The museum is located near Picoas metro station and is easy to reach by public transport or on foot from the surrounding neighbourhood. Plan time to move through the rooms at a relaxed pace so you can observe the details of the furnishings and decoration.

The entrance gate features a butterfly shape, reflecting the Art Nouveau fascination with organic forms found in nature. The stained-glass windows throughout the house showcase the hand-crafted skill that went into every architectural detail.
