Castle of Arnóia, Medieval castle in Celorico de Basto, Portugal.
The Castle of Arnóia is a medieval fortress set on a hilltop in the municipality of Celorico de Basto, in northern Portugal. It consists of a rectangular tower, a watchtower, and defensive walls that enclose the site, with a single entrance gate giving access to the interior.
The fortress was first mentioned in documents from 1064 and served as a military post used to control the surrounding region during the High Middle Ages. Over the following centuries it gradually lost its strategic role as the area's administrative center shifted elsewhere.
The castle takes its name from the village of Arnóia and sits on a hill that looks out over the surrounding valley. The stone walls and rectangular tower are still standing and give a clear sense of how medieval builders in northern Portugal worked with the local granite.
The site is open and free to visit without any prior booking needed. There is an information center on the grounds that is worth stopping at before exploring the walls and tower.
When local authorities moved away in the 18th century, the entire village around the castle was abandoned, not just the fortress itself. The site is now listed as a National Monument of Portugal, a status that has helped bring it back to public attention after years of neglect.
