The castle stands on a hilltop with stone walls and defensive structures, offering views across the surrounding Portuguese countryside and medieval town.
Princess Teresa, daughter of King Afonso Henriques, initiated the construction of this fortress between the 12th and 13th centuries during the Reconquista period.
The 15th-century palace within the castle walls exhibits architectural elements that reflect the military and economic influence of Portuguese nobility.
From March to October, visitors can explore the castle Tuesday through Sunday between 10:00 and 18:00, with guided tours available four times daily.
The castle contains remnants of an old synagogue with two pointed arches that endured through the destructive earthquake of 1755.
