Castelo de Gaia, Medieval castle ruins in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal

The castle remains stand on a hilltop overlooking the Douro River, offering views of Porto's historic center and the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.

Originally built as a Celtic settlement, the fortress evolved through Roman occupation when the area was known as Cale, later transforming into a medieval stronghold against Moorish invasions.

The castle grounds contain multiple religious structures, including the Chapel of São Marcos and Nossa Senhora do Castelo, which served the local community for generations.

The site now houses a charitable institution, with the surrounding area accessible through local bus services or the Gaia cable car system.

The castle played a central role in the legendary tale of King Ramiro II of León and his romance with a Moorish woman, leading to conflicts with Emir Alboazer.
