Ponte de Segura, Roman bridge in Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal and Spain
The Ponte de Segura stretches over the Erges River with five stone arches, connecting the municipalities of Idanha-a-Nova in Portugal and Alcántara in Spain.
Built in the second century during Emperor Trajan's reign, this Roman bridge served as a vital connection point along the road between Norba Caesarina and Bracara Augusta.
The structure stands as evidence of Roman engineering in Lusitania, with two original arches and three reconstructed ones displaying Portuguese masonry from the sixteenth century.
The bridge remains accessible from both countries via the regional road EX-207 from Piedras Albas, maintaining its function as an international crossing point.
The central arch spans 10.5 meters while four side arches extend 7.5 meters each, constructed with pink granite blocks measuring up to 3 meters in section.
