Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse in Peniche, Portugal
Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse is a coastal structure in Peniche featuring a white and red square tower with an adjoining keeper's residence. The tower stands on a rocky headland jutting into the Atlantic and reaches approximately 27 meters in height.
Construction began in 1758 under a Pombaline license, and the lighthouse became operational in 1790. This marked the start of Portugal's organized lighthouse service on this coast.
This lighthouse serves as a landmark for the maritime traditions of Peniche and reflects how central this coastline is to seafaring activities. Walking around it, you sense the deep connection between the town and the ocean.
The lighthouse sits on a rugged rocky coast with uneven terrain and strong winds. Wear sturdy footwear and stay alert near the edges, especially when conditions are wet or windy.
This beacon was automated in 1988 and no longer requires a lighthouse keeper to live on site. The PRB46 rotating system is a mechanical relic from an era when caretakers attended to such lights daily.
