Serra de Montejunto Protected Landscape

Serra de Montejunto is a mountain chain in the Lisbon area with limestone formations and caves reaching a maximum elevation of 666 meters. The protected landscape covers mixed forest zones and spans across multiple municipalities with distinct geological character.

The protected landscape was established in 1999 to safeguard this important natural area. Prior to its protection status, the region had been shaped by centuries of human settlement and land use.

The hills overlook traditional Portuguese villages with tiled houses and vineyards that reflect local rural life. These places remain working landscapes shaped by generations of farming and settlement patterns.

You can walk on trails through pine and juniper forests and explore the geological formations throughout the year. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for hiking, while the area is also good for bird watching at any season.

A winter cave in the Cadaval area hosts thousands of Miniopterus schreibersi bats, making it a crucial refuge for this rare bat species. This cave is one of the region's most important sites for understanding local wildlife.
