Fort of São Lourenço do Bugio, Renaissance fortress in Tagus River estuary, Portugal

The Fort of São Lourenço do Bugio stands on a sandbank in the Tagus River with circular stone walls measuring 62 meters in diameter.

Construction of the fort began in 1590 under architect Giovanni Vicenzo Casale and concluded in 1657 during the reign of King John IV of Portugal.

The fort represents Portuguese military engineering excellence, combining defensive capabilities with maritime navigation through its integrated lighthouse system.

The structure contains multiple functional areas including barracks, storage facilities, a cistern, and a chapel within its 33-meter internal wall diameter.

The fortress rises from the only sandbar in the Tagus that remains above water throughout the year, earning its name Cabeça Seca (Dry Head).
