Praia de Santo Amaro

Praia de Santo Amaro is a sandy beach in Oeiras that stretches for about one kilometer along the Tagus River estuary, with a marina on one side and São João das Maias Fort on the other. The water is clear and shallow, while the beach itself features wide, flat sand that slopes gently toward the water.

The adjacent São João das Maias Fort was built in 1644 to protect the river route, with a distinctive five-sided shape. Inside the fort stands a chapel from the 1700s, decorated with traditional Portuguese blue and white tiles that reflect the artistic tastes of that era.

On summer evenings, local families and neighbors gather to walk along the illuminated waterfront path that runs beside the sand. This everyday routine is a central part of how residents use and enjoy the space together.

The beach is easy to access by public transport and has paved paths for walking. It offers some shade and basic facilities, though bringing water and sun protection is wise, especially during the hottest part of the day.

Behind the marina sits a seawater swimming pool that operates only during the warmer months of the year. This facility offers visitors a chance to swim in a controlled environment separate from the open water.
