Praia de Santo Amaro, Sandy beach in Oeiras, Portugal
Praia de Santo Amaro is a sandy beach in Oeiras that runs along the Tagus River estuary, with a marina on one side and the São João das Maias Fort on the other. The sand is wide and flat, sloping gently toward the water, which stays shallow along the shoreline.
The São João das Maias Fort, which stands at the edge of the beach, was built in 1644 to guard the river approach to Lisbon. Inside it holds a chapel from the 1700s whose walls are lined with blue and white Portuguese tiles.
On summer evenings, families and neighbors meet along the lit waterfront path that runs beside the sand. This daily walk is a regular part of how people in the area spend time together outdoors.
The beach is easy to reach by public transport and has paved paths for walking along the waterfront. Bringing water and sun protection is a good idea, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
Behind the marina there is a seawater pool that opens only during the warmer months of the year. It gives swimmers a sheltered spot away from the open water of the estuary.
