Ponte romana sobre a Ribeira de Odivelas

Ponte Romana de Vila Ruiva is an ancient stone bridge crossing the Odivelas stream. It features a series of vaulted arches and a simple structure with low parapets designed for foot traffic.

The bridge dates from the first century BC and was part of Rome's extensive road network. It connected major trade routes through the Alentejo region.

The bridge demonstrates Roman engineering and has been protected as a National Monument since 1967. It served as a vital connection in the ancient road system linking major settlements across the Alentejo.

The bridge is accessible from the nearby village and can be crossed on foot or by bicycle. Visitors should watch for slippery surfaces in wet weather and wear proper footwear.

Much of the arch structure and original drainage holes remain buried under sediment accumulation. These layers reveal how the landscape has shifted over many centuries.
