Praia do Areal

Praia do Areal is an Atlantic beach with light-colored sand bordered by towering cliffs and a modest dune area to the north. The shoreline runs in a gentle curve, creating a natural cove sheltered by the surrounding terrain.

The Lourinhã region gained scientific importance through the discovery of dinosaur fossils from the Late Jurassic period. These paleontological finds have made the surrounding area a significant location for understanding ancient marine and terrestrial life.

Fishing remains a daily presence along these shores, with local boats and nets visible from the beach. This practice shapes how the community interacts with the ocean and supplies fresh seafood to nearby villages.

Swimming areas are monitored by lifeguards during summer months from June through September for visitor safety. Parking is available near the Lourinhã Aerodrome, making it easy to reach the beach.

A path at the northern end connects to Praia do Mexilhoal, where rock formations create tidal pools at low tide. These natural pools reveal a different side of the coastline and are home to small sea creatures that cling to the rocks.
