Paço da Torre da rua de D. Duarte, Tower and national monument in Viseu, Portugal

The Paço da Torre da rua de D. Duarte is a late medieval tower in Viseu, Portugal, listed as a National Monument. It has a rectangular shape with thick granite walls, small openings on the upper floor, and a two-slope tiled roof.

The tower dates to the 14th century and is linked to D. Isabel, lady of Viseu and daughter of King Fernando I. In 1476, nobleman Antão Gomes de Abreu took possession, and his family later added the Manueline decorative elements over the following decades.

The Manueline window on the top floor is the most visible detail from the street, carved with twisted columns and family coat of arms shields. These carved emblems tell visitors about the noble families who once owned and shaped the building.

The tower stands on a narrow street in Viseu's old town and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. It is best seen from the outside, where you can get close enough to examine the stone facade and the carved window details.

The tower is sometimes said to be the birthplace of King D. Duarte, born in 1391, though no solid evidence confirms this. The street it stands on takes his name, keeping that connection alive in the memory of the city.
