Alto da Senhora da Graça is a hilltop sanctuary near Vila Real, in northern Portugal, crowned by a small chapel at its summit. A paved road winds up from the city through steep terrain, opening onto wide views over the surrounding valley.
The area was known in ancient times as Cininia, a settlement of the Tamecani people, before Roman forces took control of the region in the 2nd century BC. Over the following centuries the hilltop was gradually transformed into a Christian pilgrimage site.
The chapel at the top is an active pilgrimage site where people from the region come to pray and leave votive offerings. On religious feast days, the road leading up becomes a procession route for local devotees.
The chapel can be reached by car via the paved road, but the steep sections require careful driving. Those who want to walk or cycle up should wear appropriate footwear and bring enough water for the climb.
The road up to the summit is one of the most feared climbs in professional cycling and regularly features as a decisive point in major races like the Volta a Portugal. Because of this, the sanctuary's name appears in sports coverage almost as often as in religious contexts.
