Dunas de São Jacinto Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Torreira, Portugal.
Dunas de São Jacinto Nature Reserve spreads across 700 hectares along the Ria de Aveiro, combining white sand beaches, dunes, pine forests, and wetland areas into one mixed landscape. These different habitats create a place where sand, forest, and water meet.
Maritime pine forests were planted along the dune edges in the late 1800s to hold back the shifting sands of this coastal area. This planting effort helped anchor the changing shoreline.
The visitor center displays miniature models of traditional local boats, including the colorful moliceiro vessels that reflect the region's deep connection to water.
The area is accessible via four marked hiking trails of varying lengths, with viewing platforms set near water points for bird watching. These paths let you move through the different habitats one after another.
Freshwater ponds in the central area shelter waterfowl and are especially important for local herons that hunt here for food. These calm waters stand apart from the salty lagoon waters nearby.
