Salinas da Fonte da Bica

Salinas de Rio Maior is a nature reserve and salt extraction site featuring multiple rectangular pools filled with water seven times saltier than seawater, sourced from underground deposits. The network of basins and channels distributes this mineral-rich water throughout the site in a rhythmic pattern.

The first documented mention of these salt flats dates to 1177, though evidence suggests salt extraction occurred in prehistoric times. The site's ongoing use demonstrates centuries of continuous activity in this location.

Local families maintain traditional salt production methods passed down through generations, shaping how the salt ponds look and function today. This heritage is visible in the careful arrangement of pools and the slow seasonal rhythm of the work.

The reserve welcomes visitors year-round, with guided tours available through the local tourist office to learn about salt production methods. Comfortable shoes and sun protection are recommended since most areas are open and flat.

Located 30 kilometers from the ocean, these salt flats remain the only active interior salt production site in Europe. The presence of such mineral-rich water so far from the sea comes from ancient underground deposits formed millions of years ago.
