Termas da Piedade, Thermal spa in Alcobaça e Vestiaria, Portugal
Termas da Piedade is a thermal spa in Alcobaça e Vestiaria where natural water emerges at 27 degrees Celsius. The water contains high concentrations of chloride, sodium, bicarbonate, sulfate, and calcium compounds used in various therapeutic treatments.
Cistercian monks from Alcobaça built the first thermal facility with basic structures including a house and immersion bathtubs for treatments. The site later experienced water source contamination that resulted in a prolonged closure spanning multiple decades.
The spa takes its name from a chapel dedicated to Senhora da Piedade built in the late 16th century during Cardinal-King D. Henrique's reign. Today, visitors experience a location where this religious heritage mixes with contemporary health practices.
The facility operates as part of Your Hotel & Spa Alcobaça and offers treatments such as Vichy showers, hydrocolontherapy, and thermal water baths under medical supervision. Visitors should confirm in advance which treatments are available during their visit and what medical oversight is provided.
After 22 years of closure due to water source contamination, the facility reopened in September 2019 with new treatment methods. The team was expanded with qualified clinical staff to ensure contemporary therapy standards.
