Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel features religious architecture with a church, cloister, and multiple rooms spread across its stone structure.

Founded in 1251 during the reign of King Afonso III, this convent was the first Carmelite establishment in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula.

The convent served as a reception point for chaplains of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem returning from the Holy Land.

Visitors can access the convent Monday through Friday from 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 16:30, with Saturday morning hours from 10:00 to 12:00.

The church and cloister contain a 1630 oil painting by artist André Reinoso and received Public Interest Building status in 1944.
