Capela de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Incarnation sits on Monte de São Gabriel and features a gallery with seven arches and a grand staircase at its entrance. The small sanctuary includes a baroque staircase built in the 18th century and holds a statue of Saint Michael.

The sanctuary was built in 1588 following reports of a miracle when a woman named Susana Dias regained the ability to walk. A baroque staircase was added in the 18th century, showing how the site grew and was maintained over time.

The interior walls feature colorful ceramic tiles from the 17th century that show scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Saint Gabriel. These artworks tell biblical stories and show the skilled craftsmanship of that era.

The site is elevated and requires climbing a steep staircase with many steps, demanding reasonable physical fitness. Comfortable shoes and time to rest are recommended, especially during warm weather.

The staircase is remarkably long with around 160 steps and was built in sections with different styles. As you climb, you can catch surprising views across the landscape around Leiria.
