Santuário de São Bento da Porta Aberta, Religious sanctuary in Rio Caldo, Portugal
The sanctuary stands beside the waters of Caniçada reservoir, featuring a main temple constructed with neoclassical and neo-baroque architectural elements.
The religious site originated in 1615 with a small chapel, which maintained its doors permanently open to provide shelter for travelers crossing the region.
The sanctuary holds three major pilgrimages annually: March 21 for Saint Benedict's death, July 11 for Europe's patron feast, and August 10-15 for popular celebrations.
The basilica opens daily from 7:30 AM until sunset, with masses held at 10:30 AM on weekdays and additional services during weekends and religious festivities.
With 2.5 million annual visitors, this sanctuary ranks as Portugal's second most visited religious site after Fatima, receiving its basilica status in 2015.
