The concrete arch dam extends 284 meters across the Cávado River, reaching a height of 75 meters at an elevation of 280 meters.

Engineers Jean Bellier and André Coyne designed the structure, which began operations in 1953 as part of the HICA hydroelectric development project.

The dam represents Portuguese industrial development, marking a shift toward renewable energy infrastructure in the mid-twentieth century.

The facility generates 249 megawatts of power through two stations, Salamonde I from 1953 and Salamonde II, added in 2015.
