Santa Luzia Dam, Hydroelectric power station in Pampilhosa da Serra, Portugal
The Santa Luzia Dam features four Pelton turbines generating 32 megawatts of power through its 76-meter-high concrete arch structure on the Unhais River.
Engineer André Coyne designed this hydroelectric facility, which began construction in 1930 and commenced operations in 1942 as part of Portugal's energy infrastructure development.
The dam represents Portuguese engineering progress in renewable energy production, marking the transition toward sustainable power generation in the mid-twentieth century.
The reservoir maintains a capacity of 53.7 million cubic meters of water, producing approximately 55 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually for the region.
The concrete structure experiences material swelling due to alkali-silica reactions, requiring specific monitoring and maintenance protocols to ensure structural integrity.
