Cadaval, Administrative division in Lisbon District, Portugal
Cadaval is an administrative division in the Oeste region, west of Lisbon, divided into seven civil parishes. The territory mixes small towns and villages with farmland and low hills.
Cadaval's boundaries were drawn in 1371, giving it one of the longer administrative histories in the region. The structure was adjusted over the following centuries as Portugal went through different periods of governance.
Cadaval is connected to Sofia Quintino, a nurse who helped shape secular healthcare in Portugal during the 19th century. Her story is still part of local memory and gives the place a particular place in the history of modern Portuguese society.
The terrain is hilly in parts, so comfortable shoes are a good idea if you plan to walk between or within the parishes. A GPS or local map helps a lot, as roads between villages can be narrow and easy to miss.
The Serra de Montejunto, which rises above Cadaval, is the highest point in the surrounding area and can be seen from a great distance on clear days. Its slopes look out over the fields and vineyards of the Oeste region.
