Ruínas arqueológicas de São Martinho de Dume, Archaeological monastery ruins in Dume, Portugal.
The Ruínas arqueológicas de São Martinho de Dume are remains of a Benedictine monastery with basilica foundations, Roman building structures, and floor mosaics from different periods. The site also contains traces of a bathhouse and multiple rooms from Roman times that have been partially excavated and documented.
In the 6th century, Martin of Braga established a religious community here by converting an existing Roman villa into a monastery. The community grew into an important center and eventually gained the status of an autonomous diocese.
This was a key religious center showing how Roman structures were transformed into a Christian sanctuary. Visitors can see how the building layout and spaces reflect this shift and reveal the continuity between ancient and medieval times.
The site is located in Dume near Braga and is open to visitors with regular hours and guided tours available for groups. Wear comfortable shoes as the ground is uneven and some paths are unpaved.
Excavations since 1992 uncovered an octagonal bathhouse from Roman times, revealing how well-equipped this place once was. Understanding the original Roman comforts gives insight into the living conditions before it became a monastery.
