Castle of Estremoz, 13th-century medieval castle in Estremoz, Portugal.

Castle of Estremoz is a 13th-century medieval fortress perched on a hilltop with defensive walls, towers, and other structures arranged for strategic protection. The Torre das Três Coroas, a 28-meter-high keep, forms the central core of the fortification system.

King Afonso III ordered the construction of the castle's walls in 1261 to create a strategic defense against invasions. This fortification served the region throughout the medieval period and remained essential to local security for generations.

The Chapel of Queen Saint Isabel inside features traditional Portuguese azulejo tiles that reflect local artistic heritage. Visitors can still experience these decorated spaces and sense the connection to royal life that defined the place.

The site now operates as a luxury hotel, which means interiors are accessible while original stone structures remain intact throughout. Being perched on a hilltop, comfortable shoes are helpful for exploring the grounds and enjoying views of the surrounding area.

The castle was built using local white marble, a material sourced from a region famous for marble production worldwide. This distinctive building stone not only gives the structure its durability but also connects it to the area's economic heritage.
