Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça, 12th-century Cistercian monastery in Paião, Portugal.
Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça is a former monastery in Paião, in central Portugal, founded during the medieval period. It has a tall front facade with two side towers and a single-nave church connected to several lateral chapels.
The monastery was founded in 1175 by King Afonso Henriques, making it one of the oldest religious sites in Portugal. In the 16th century it joined a new monastic order that turned it into a place of study and learning.
The monastery served as a spiritual center where monks lived and prayed together according to strict rules. Its presence shaped the religious life and customs of the surrounding community for centuries.
The site is currently going through restoration work, so visitors may encounter areas under construction and limited access. It is worth checking ahead to understand which parts of the complex are open before planning a visit.
After closing as a monastery in 1834, the building was used as a rice processing facility from 1911 to 1976. Traces of this industrial phase can still be noticed in parts of the structure today.
