Baia Mare, County capital in northwestern Maramureș, Romania
The city spreads along the Săsar River valley at 228 meters elevation, protected by the Igniș and Gutâi Mountains in northern Romania.
The settlement, first documented in 1329, developed from a Saxon mining colony into a regional center due to its gold and silver deposits.
The St. Stephen Tower, a gothic clock tower from the 14th century, stands in the medieval quarter as a central symbol of the city.
Maramureș International Airport, located 10 kilometers west of the city, connects Baia Mare with Bucharest and selected European destinations.
The local climate supports Mediterranean vegetation patterns, allowing chestnut trees to grow in the surrounding mountain areas.
