Baia Mare

Baia Mare is situated in the Săsar River valley at 228 meters elevation in northwestern Romania. The city is surrounded by the Igniș and Gutâi Mountains, which frame the landscape and protect the valley.

The settlement was first documented in 1329 and grew from a Saxon mining colony. Rich deposits of gold and silver in the region transformed it into an important center for commerce and influence.

The St. Stephen Tower, a 14th-century Gothic clock tower, stands in the old town and defines the city's character. Around this central point, traditional buildings and streets still reflect the medieval heritage that shaped the area.

The Maramureș International Airport is located 10 kilometers to the west and offers connections to Bucharest and selected European cities. This makes planning arrival and departure straightforward for most visitors.

The local climate supports Mediterranean plant growth in the surrounding mountain areas. Chestnut trees thrive here despite the northern location, a feature visitors often overlook.
