Báthory István High School in Cluj-Napoca, Educational heritage site in central Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Báthory István High School is a two-story classical school building on Mihail Kogălniceanu Street in the center of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The facade is symmetrical, with evenly spaced windows on both floors and white walls that stand out along the street.
The school was founded in 1579 by Prince István Báthory of Transylvania as a Jesuit institution, and it later moved to a former Franciscan monastery. After a fire in 1789 destroyed that structure, the current building was put up in 1821.
The school teaches in both Romanian and Hungarian, and this is visible throughout the building in bilingual signs and notices. This reflects the daily reality of Cluj-Napoca, where both languages are part of everyday life.
The main entrance is on Kogălniceanu Street, with an additional entry from Universității Street. Visiting outside regular school hours is a good idea to avoid disrupting the school day.
The building was designed by architect Friedrich Thallinger after the 1789 fire, and it is one of the few early 19th-century school buildings in the region that has remained in continuous use. The school has been operating without interruption for over 4 centuries, making it one of the oldest still-active schools in Romania.
