Báthory István High School in Cluj-Napoca, Educational heritage site in central Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Báthory István High School is a two-story classical building with white walls and rectangular windows located on Mihail Kogălniceanu Street in the city center. Its facade follows a symmetrical design with regularly spaced openings across both levels.
The institution was founded in 1579 by Prince István Báthory of Transylvania as a Jesuit school and later relocated to a former Franciscan monastery. The building standing today was constructed in 1821 following a fire in 1789 that destroyed the previous structure.
The school teaches in both Romanian and Hungarian, reflecting the multilingual diversity that characterizes education in Cluj-Napoca.
The school building is accessible via the main entrance on Kogălniceanu Street and additional entry points from Universității Street on weekdays. Visitors should plan their visit outside regular school hours to avoid disrupting classes.
Architect Friedrich Thallinger designed the current building after the fire and incorporated classical principles into its architecture. This redesign made the structure an important example of 19th-century school architecture in the region.
