Dorohoi, city in Botoșani County, Romania
Dorohoi is a small town in northern Romania, in Botoșani County, sitting on the right bank of the Jijia river. The center is compact, with narrow streets, old stone buildings, and several churches that mark nearly every corner of the town.
Dorohoi was first recorded in 1407 as a known spot for trading horses in Moldavia. Over the following centuries it was attacked several times by outside forces, which slowed its growth and left visible marks on how it rebuilt itself.
The name Dorohoi comes from Mihail Dorohoianul, a local administrative figure. The town remains a place where old customs live on in the churches, at the markets, and in how people still greet each other and celebrate together.
The main points of interest, including churches and local museums, are close to each other and easy to reach on foot from the town center. Small hotels and guesthouses are available for those who want to stay overnight.
An old wooden church from the late 1700s has carved beams shaped like a ship's hull, a design rarely seen in the region. Inside, religious books from the same period are still kept, offering a direct connection to the craftsmen who built the space.
