Saint Margaret Church sits at the center of Mediaș on Piața Castelului, displaying late Gothic architecture with pointed arches and ribbed vaults. A massive defensive tower rises above the roof, giving the building a fortress-like appearance that was typical of Saxon churches.
Construction began in 1437 after a raid, and the church was completed in 1488 under the direction of the Transylvanian Saxon community. The extended building period shows the community's determination to create a resilient structure that would endure.
The church holds one of the largest collections of Transylvanian rugs from the 16th to 18th centuries, woven and donated by local families over generations. These textiles show the craftsmanship of the community and its connection to Eastern trade routes.
The church is located on Piața Castelului in the town center, easy to reach on foot from surrounding areas. Visitors should be prepared for narrow staircases and low doorways when exploring the medieval sections of the building.
Medieval frescoes hide beneath layers of paint on the northern walls, occasionally revealed during restoration work. The Gothic winged altarpiece from 1480 displays the artistic skill of the period and remains one of the building's most striking interior features.
