Carolina obelisk, Historic obelisk in Museum Square, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
The Carolina Obelisk stands in Museum Square and rises about 10 meters tall with detailed carved panels on three sides. These depict events from the imperial family's visit and are topped by four stone eagles positioned at the corners.
The monument was built in 1831 to commemorate when Emperor Francis I and Empress Carolina Augusta visited the city in 1817. This royal visit took place during the Habsburg rule of Transylvania and was an important occasion for Cluj.
The carved panels show the medieval coat of arms of Cluj and depict the imperial family entering through the city gate. These images tell the story of an important royal visit and how the city presented itself at that time.
The monument sits in Museum Square in the city center and is easy to reach on foot. The plaza itself is open to the public and you can view the obelisk from all sides without restrictions.
Four stone eagles holding iron wreaths decorate the upper corners and were handcrafted by local artisans Anton Csuros and Samuel Nagy. These ornamental details showcase the stonework skill of regional craftsmen from the 19th century.
