Biserica Evanghelică din Bistrița

The Evangelical Church in Bistritza combines Gothic and Renaissance elements in its outer structure. A tall tower marks the city skyline, while the exterior walls are decorated with detailed carved stonework.

The church stands on the foundation of an earlier Saxon chapel first recorded in 1332. The current structure was built between 1533 and 1560 under the direction of master builder Petrus Italus.

The choir stalls inside display fine geometric inlays that show the craftsmanship of Transylvanian Saxons in the 16th century. These furnishings were made with great care and reveal the skill of local artisans.

The building is regularly open to visitors, and you can explore its interior spaces at your own pace. It is best to wear comfortable shoes as you walk across the stone floors and may climb the interior stairs.

The tower of this church is one of the tallest medieval towers in the region and dominates Bistritza's city skyline. Its slender form and fine proportions set it apart from many other religious buildings of its era.
