Castra of Ighiu

The Castra of Ighiu features stone walls measuring 7 meters high and 2.1 meters thick, with four symmetrical gates protected by defense towers.

The Roman fort, constructed between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD, served as a military garrison until the departure of Roman administration around 271-275 AD.

The internal organization of the castrum included dedicated spaces for military headquarters, storage facilities, and barracks, reflecting Roman military structure and hierarchy.

Located 2.2 kilometers southwest of the local church, the archaeological site contains visible remains of defensive towers and the original south gate structure.

The fortification encompasses 20.7 hectares with a quadrangular layout of 480 by 432 meters, protected by a 5-6 meter deep exterior moat system.
