Castra of Tirighina-Bărboși

Castra of Tirighina-Bărboși, Roman military fort near Danube River in Galați, Romania.

Castra of Tirighina-Bărboshi was a Roman military fort located on elevated ground where the Siret River meets the Danube. The installation spread across about 10 hectares and contained barracks, administrative buildings, and storage structures for the stationed troops.

Emperor Trajan ordered the construction of this fort in the 2nd century to secure the Roman frontier along the Danube. It served as a key position along the Limes defense line and remained garrisoned for decades.

The site reveals how soldiers and civilians coexisted here nearly 2000 years ago through scattered pottery, coins, and everyday objects. These artifacts show the routines of people living between the riverbank and the fort walls.

Wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is mostly uneven and partly overgrown with grass and shrubs. The best visiting season is autumn or spring when weather is mild and visibility across the ruins is clear.

One of the most important discoveries was a marble stone with Latin inscriptions listing soldiers' names and their ranks. This inscription helped archaeologists understand which military units were posted here and how the defense line was organized.
