Csernovics Castle

Csernovics Castle is a historic building in Macea featuring two distinct wings, with the left section containing two towers built during the first half of the 19th century. Today it houses administrative offices of Vasile Goldis Western University and serves as an educational institution in Arad County.

The castle was originally owned by Peter Csernovics but was lost in a card game, then acquired by the Károlyi family in 1862. This acquisition marked a significant turning point in the estate's history.

The sculpture garden displays works dedicated to Romanian writers, merging literature with the natural setting of the estate. Visitors walking through the grounds can discover these artistic pieces while experiencing the connection between cultural heritage and landscape.

The castle is part of the university campus today and can be explored during visits, though it is advisable to check in advance whether guided tours or visiting times are available for the public. The surrounding area also provides access to the gardens and arboretum on the grounds.

The castle grounds feature an arboretum established in 1968 with a notable collection of rare tree species, including a remarkable Ginkgo biloba specimen. This botanical collection makes the location significant from a natural history perspective alongside its architectural past.
