Creasta Cocoșului, Nature reserve in Maramureș, Romania
Creasta Cocoșului is a mountain ridge in the Gutâi Mountains with a distinctive concave rock formation extending over about 200 meters. The terrain rises to around 1,400 meters elevation and features exposed rocky sections along the crest.
The formation is the final remnant of a volcanic crater, with its last eruption occurring about 9 million years ago in the Maramureș region. This geological past shaped the distinctive structure visible today.
The name means Rooster's Crest and refers to how the natural rock formation resembles a rooster's comb. Visitors can see this distinctive shape from various viewpoints and understand the local naming tradition.
Marked trails with red stripes, blue crosses, and yellow crosses guide visitors through the area with multiple starting points. You can access the route from Gutâi Pass or Breb village, depending on your preferred difficulty and distance.
The protected area is home to lynx, bears, and mountain eagles while also attracting rock climbers and paragliders. These activities coexist in ways that reveal how the landscape serves different purposes for different visitors.
