Caraorman-Wald, Nature reserve in Danube Delta, Romania.
Caraorman Forest is a nature reserve in the Danube Delta region featuring sand dunes and dense woodland across a large sandbank. The site covers multiple habitats surrounded by water and wetland areas.
The sandbank formed approximately 8,000 years ago when sand deposits blocked the Tulcea gulf and created the Danube Delta. The area received formal protection status in 1990.
The name comes from Turkish and means 'black forest', referring to how thick tree growth casts deep shadows across certain forest sections.
Visitors can best explore the area with help from local guides who offer rides by car or tractor. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as the terrain is open and exposed to sunlight.
A particularly old oak tree grows at Hunters' Fountain and impresses with its massive trunk circumference. This specimen is considered one of the largest trees in the entire region.
